I am not an attorney, scientist, teacher, architect, or of any professional association. I am just a passionately curious single mom with helping hands, and great friends. So When Lawyers to the Rescue – posted the Legal Clinic. I called Mrs. Aronfeld and said she could count on me. I thought I would support LTR, with my presence. So this Saturday I showed up.

MIND YOU THIS IS NOT JUST FOR THE LAW STUDENTS: IT IS FOR ALL STUDENTS; IN FACT, THIS IS FOR EVERYONE.

I was born and raised in Miami so Camillus House is familiar to me. However, I had never been there. The experience was awesome and powerful. There are no words that describe what I felt; but, I can only tell you that I understand Mother Teresa’s lifelong mission to help the poor and the sick. There is something to be said about being with the broken that brands your own heart. Remember, the poor are victims of injustice and oppression. The poor and the sick do not have access to the resources of the rich. The difference in the world between people is what we own, and don’t own. This is one of reasons – I support Lawyers to the Rescue, they are the voice of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Saint Thomas University School of Law Student, Domenick Lazzara describes his experience at the legal clinic:

“This weekend I had the opportunity to work with Lawyers to the Rescue at the Camillus House in Miami, Florida. While I had been invited many times by Mr. Aronfeld, I always had a prior-commitment. I can now say that the experience was well worth the wait. It is difficult to find the words to summarize how rewarding it is to use God’s blessings for the good of others. This included helping a family law attorney counsel a recovering addict in his quest to gain paternity of his daughter, serving food and water to the hungry and underprivileged, and offering an endless amount of smiles.

The most surprising aspect of this experience was the gratefulness of the people I served. It changed my traditional stereotypes of the homeless man “bothering” me on the corner asking for change. And more importantly, experiencing this in the company of successful attorneys was important for me to see. As a third year law student, it is encouraging to know that there are those amongst my soon to be profession that generally care about the world and the lawyer’s invaluable place in it. Thank you for the experience, I look forward to the next gathering.

On July 30, 2011, Lawyers to the Rescue sponsored its “Lend a Hand to Help a Paw” event with the Humane Society of Greater Miami. This was LTR’s first furry encounter and it was wild! Volunteers walked and played with the shelter’s dogs. Miami attorneys Marco Britt and Jessica Laleh played fetch with their new furry friends, while attorneys P.J. Mitchell and Katty Julca helped walk and socialize the pooches. LTR member Theresa Cavanaugh showed her support and love for animals by coming from Palm Beach county to participate and help walk and care for the dogs.

Members of LTR donated over 80 pounds of kitty litter, cat food, puppy milk, collars, bowls, shampoo, bleach, towels, and other items from the Humane Society’s wishlist. “The event was a great success,” said Ms. Laleh. “This was my first time volunteering at a shelter and I plan on returning next weekend to help out. The experience was both rewarding and humbling.”

The crew witnessed some very happy adoptions, however, plenty of pets are still looking for a good home. Donations are always needed and supplies are low. Please visit www.humanesocietymiami.org to donate items or to rescue your next best friend. Watch our calendar for future events with local animal shelters and please remember to spay or neuter your pet!

Poverty is a punishment–punishment for a crime that was never committed. If poverty was a constitutional issue, it would violate the eighth amendment. Poverty is not the presence of but the lack of something.

A few weeks ago, I volunteered at a free clinic. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. The standard of living described by many of the people who came sounded like something out of a Third World country–not the United States, and surely not Miami. However, in Miami Dade, a staggering 17% of people live below the poverty line. The majority of these people are either under the age of 18 or above the age of 65. With a weak economy, these numbers will continue to rise if people do not take action. So, as you finish reading this, take a moment to think which group you fall into: those who have more food than appetite, or those with more appetite than food.

the_golden_rule.jpgEveryone has heard of “The Golden Rule,” our parents introduced it when we were taught to share, it was preached to us on the playground by elementary school teachers, and even referenced to during worship. Yet, if you ask a group of people, regardless of their age, gender sexuality or race, if they have ever been bullied or made fun of, each and every one of them will raise his or her hand.

No doubt exist that bullying is an ancient occurrence, but recently, due in part to the massive growth of the number of youth who use email, text messaging, and sites like Facebook, the number of bullying-induced teen suicides has risen tremendously. In an effort to stop this, Lawyers to the Rescue has partnered with National Voices for Equality, Education & Enlightenment (NVEEE) to stand up to bullying through the organization of a town meeting. If anyone feels that they have anything to offer this event see the contact information below. And on a final note, ask yourself not only if you have ever been bullied, but if you have ever bullied, and more importantly what has it done for you.

“The world seems so small so we reach out, because we can.”

The biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 140 years struck the northeast coast on triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, schools, cars and buildings. Utter devastation and the imminent threat of a nuclear disaster we have all seen the frightening images of the earthquake, tsunami and fires. The death toll keeps climbing and more than that, the worst is yet to come. With the current nuclear disaster the size and scope of Japan’s disaster continues to unfold.

Lawyers to the Rescue and its members went work putting together a fundraiser to benefit the victims of Japan’s tragic events. The response was overwhelming many immediately contacted us and donated items and services to the silent auction. Donation include Miami Heat thickets, Salvador Dali Painting, Restaurant dinning certificates, Mercedes Watch, gift baskets, wines, gift cards, red carpet party, a number service consultations, messages, custom made shirts and much more. The event venue and all the profits from the dinner were generously donated by Sakura Coral Gables Japanese restaurant. The event was a success thanks to all the generous people who donated, participated and attended this event.

The most important aspect of Lawyers to the Rescue is that it helps serve an underprivileged and underserved population of our fellow citizens. I truly believe in its initiative because lawyers are the best equipped to help this group with their urgent legal needs. The aggregate effect of serving one member of society is that it will benefit the community as a whole.

Further, at a time when universities and employers are putting more and more emphasis on community service, Lawyers to the Rescue has responded by offering a community service opportunity to lawyers and law students in South Florida. My personal experience with the legal clinic has been eye-opening. The organization has allowed me to interact with people from all walks of life and with many different legal issues. This interaction is taken a step further by allowing students to actually sit in on consultatons that the attorneys have with the clients. Lawyers to the Rescue also allows students to conduct the actual intakes with the clients in a triage fashion that makes it very dynamic and exciting.

This concurrent blend of learning and applying knowledge to help those in need creates a very educational and rewarding experience. I feel that all this leads to making me more well-rounded, conscientious individual as well as a stronger candidate for any position legal or otherwise.
